BIO

Pushing against restrictive expectations and societal gender norms absorbed growing up in Kentucky, Christine Belton, now a Philadelphia teaching artist, employs ink, fabric, clay, metal and oils as they investigate gendered body-policing narratives and body objectification. Drawing upon 30 years as an art educator, Belton’s work is informed by supporting their students as emerging artists and as they grapple with their own emotional development.

Whether painting portraits, printing with the body or handbuilding stoneware garments, their work challenges cultural body narratives. Belton compresses compositions and objects; the detailed, highly textured surfaces invite viewers to linger and grapple with two persistent questions, “How does that which confines/oppresses also provide protection and security?” and “To what extent do we create and add to our own sense of confinement?”
